Overview

The NSW Department of Education in conjunction with Apple, arranged an enterprise agreement for the provision of Jamf Pro for Mobile Device Management (MDM) services for iPadOS and macOS devices. The agreement provides:

  • technical support for on-boarding new devices with Apple School Manager & Jamf Pro MDM
  • enterprise pricing for 4-year Jamf Pro MDM licences for all new Apple devices purchased through EdBuy
  • licences for existing Apple devices are also available for purchase via EdBuy
  • individual school MDM consoles to allow local management of school Apple devices
  • centralised management for core DoE network settings and recommended configurations
  • local technical support in the use of Apple School Manager and Jamf Pro available via EDConnect

What are Apple School Manager and MDM?

As part of modern management of Apple devices, there are two core components to be aware of, both fully supported by NSW Department of Education:

  • Apple School Manager (ASM)
  • Mobile Device Management (MDM)

Apple School Manager is a simple, web-based portal that helps ICT Coordinators and School TSOs to seamlessly deploy iPad and Mac in schools using Automated Device Enrolment. This is also where schools can purchase the apps that they wish to deploy to their Apple devices used across the school.

Mobile device management lets you securely, remotely and wirelessly configure all Apple devices deployed at your school. The NSW Department of Education have partnered with MDM vendor, Jamf, to fully support the on-boarding, setup and management of the Jamf Pro MDM solution.

Procurement of new Apple devices with Jamf Pro licences

Every new Apple device purchased via EdBuy since the middle of September 2019, is bundled with:

  • a 4-year Jamf Pro MDM licence

The 4-year licences will automatically be added to the school's account and allow for an automatic out-of-the-box enrolment and configuration experience for users at your site. For schools already setup with the Apple School Manager & Jamf Pro, any new Apple devices purchased via EdBuy will be automatically added to the school's Apple School Manager console and ready to be automatically deployed using their Jamf Pro MDM.

Ordering Jamf Pro Licences for unlicenced or expiring Apple devices

For schools with unlicenced Apple devices, 1-year Jamf Pro licences can be separately purchased via EdBuy in packs of 5. Just open the Apple catalogue to see the two separate Jamf Pro licence offerings for iPads and Macs. These same 1 year licence packs can be purchased to extend management of four-year old Apple devices with a soon-to-expire or expired Jamf Pro licence. As your school's existing Jamf licence expire, the Jamf licensing team will be in touch via email (from nswdoelicensing@jamf.com) to the main school email account. To ensure that your expired devices remain licenced, please place your order via EdBuy within two weeks of receiving that email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: We have existing iPads and/or Macs. Can we get Jamf Pro licences for these?
A: YES! Schools can separately order a 1 year licence for iPads OR Macs via EdBuy in packs of five (5).

Q: We need to get Jamf Pro licences to extend seven iPads thart have expiring licences. Can I order a 7-pack?
A: The one-year licences are only available in packs of five. You will need to purchase two 5-packs.

Q: What models of iPad and Mac are compatible and can be managed by Jamf Pro?
A: A complete list of system requirements is available here.

Q: Are licences transferable to another device in case of failure? Or are they tied to a particular device?
A: YES! Jamf Pro licences are fully transferable. If an iPad or Mac needs to be replaced under warranty, Apple will automatically adjust DEP and Jamf Pro licence allowing the new device to automatically configure when turned on!

Q: Our school already uses Jamf School for MDM services. Do we have to transfer to Jamf Pro?
A: Schools should consider whether continuing with their current Jamf School instance is appropriate based on their current situation. New devices purchased are provided with a Jamf Pro licence. Jamf provides options for transfer of these licences to Jamf School where required. Your local Apple Champ can provide you with options for migrating to Jamf Pro, if that’s a preference.

Q: Our school currently uses another MDM solution [eg. Mosyle Manager / Meraki / AirWatch etc]. Do we have to change to Jamf Pro?
A: It is strongly recommended that all schools take advantage of the benefits of joining the department's supported MDM service.

Q: If we move to Jamf Pro will we lose all the apps we purchased under Apple School Manager?
A: In short, the licences are not lost as they are associated with ASM - not with your MDM. If a school wanted to migrate from say, Jamf School to Jamf Pro, as part of that process they would need to unenrol the devices from Jamf School, which unassigns the licences used by those devices. Your local Apple Champ can assist to ensure the licences appear in Jamf Pro as unassigned and ready to re-assign to devices.

Q: If we move to Jamf Pro for our MDM, do we need to have an Apple Caching Server?
A: Absolutely! To avoid internet bandwidth congestion at your school, an Apple Caching Server is highly recommended to better support the use of Apple devices on your network - school-owned or BYO. More details are available here.
